What it is

Teachers had arrived in Galatia telling Gentile converts that they were not really in unless they were circumcised and kept the Law. Paul’s response opens without a single word of thanks — the only letter of his that does — and gets to who has bewitched you by chapter three.

It is also where he tells the story of confronting Peter at Antioch to his face, which he evidently thought the Galatians needed to hear.

Known for

2:20, I have been crucified with Christ. 3:28. 5:22–23, the fruit of the Spirit.

A note for Orthodox readers

Galatians 3:27 — as many of you as were baptised into Christ have put on Christ — is sung at baptisms and on the great feasts in place of the Trisagion. You have heard it even if you have not read it.

Where it sits

Undisputed. Dating depends on whether Galatia means the northern region or the southern cities Paul visited on his first journey, which is why estimates run from the late 40s to the mid 50s.
